Forget the "rules." Here's how to find a homecoming dress that makes you feel incredible, based on your body, your style, and what actually feels like you.

Forget the "rules." Here's how to find a homecoming dress that makes you feel incredible, based on your body, your style, and what actually feels like you.

The old "dress for your body type" advice is everywhere… and it's outdated. Worse, it often makes people feel more self-conscious, not less. Reading a list of what your "shape" should hide before a big dance isn't exactly a confidence boost.

Here's a better way to think about it. Instead of rules, focus on what styles tend to feel most comfortable and confident for different shapes, as a starting point, not a mandate. If something on this list doesn't match how you feel in a dress, trust that feeling over any "rule" every time. This is a quick, little guide that will help you navigate the styles.

Petite Frames

Here’s what usually works for the shorter girlies: Shorter lengths that visually elongate the leg line, vertical details (like seaming or a vertical print), V-necks that create length up top, and fitted waists that define your shape rather than swallow it.

What can overwhelm: Very voluminous skirts and thick horizontal bands, both of which can visually shorten the frame.

Style inspo: A mini wrap dress, a fitted midi paired with heels, or a sleek column gown.

Real talk: Wear heels if you want the extra height (skip them if you don't; we’re still having a kitten heel or boot moment). Comfort always wins over any styling "trick."

Tall Frames

What tends to work: Maxi gowns, midi dresses, and bold prints! Height gives you a canvas that a lot of styles simply look great on and opens the door to experiment.

What can feel awkward: Minis sometimes end up reading as micros on a longer frame, or sleeves that stop short of the wrist. Love a quarter-sleeve sweater moment, but it’s a bit different on a dress.

Style inspo: A floor-length slit gown, a structured maxi, or a wide-leg jumpsuit. Think “Bond girl” vibes!

Real talk: Tall girls can wear anything, including the mini! Don't let anyone tell you a shorter length "isn't for you."

Curvy / Plus Frames

What tends to work: Wrap dresses, empire waists, stretchy fabrics that move with you, and styles with a defined waist.

What can feel uncomfortable: Very stiff fabrics with no give, or poorly placed seams that dig in rather than skim.

Style inspo: Satin wrap midis, corset-bodice A-lines, or a stretchy sequin mini.

Important note: "Flattering" should mean what makes you feel good, not what makes you look smaller. Those aren't the same thing, and only one of them actually matters on the night of the dance.

Lila’s approach: Lila doesn’t filter based on size. She curates based on your stated preferences and vibe, not on a size chart deciding what you're allowed to see.

Athletic Frames

What tends to work: Styles that create angles to accentuate curves, peplum details, ruffles, wrap styles, and belted waists all add dimension.

What also works: Leaning into the straight silhouette entirely with sleek, minimalist styles that let clean lines do the talking.

Style inspo: A ruffle-tier mini, a belted wrap dress, or a structured two-piece set.

Hourglass Frames

What tends to work: Just about anything fitted at the waist. Your natural shape is already the proportion the fashion industry spends most of its time chasing, so most fitted styles will work with you, rather than against you.

Fitted minis, wrap dresses, bodycon minis, and corset styles all tend to work beautifully.

Style inspo: A satin slip dress, a fitted midi, or a bodycon dress with a slit.

The Real Rule

After all of this, the honest answer is that there's really only one rule that matters: does it make you feel like yourself?

Confidence is the most visible thing in any photo. More than silhouette, more than color, more than whatever's trending this season, the thing people notice is how you carry yourself in what you're wearing. A dress that follows every "rule" but doesn't feel like you will never read as well in photos as one that breaks all of them but makes you light up.

If you love it, it fits. Remember, body is tea <3
