Here's the story of why we built her, and why she started long before there was ever a company.

It Started With a Prom Dress

Before Lila was a product, she was a favor for a teenager.

A young relative of Lila founder, Maria Shum, was staring down prom dress shopping the way so many of us do: overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, and no closer to an answer after combing through tabs. Maria stepped in, not as a stylist, but as someone who cared enough to actually pay attention to her taste, her style, her budget, the version of herself she wanted to feel like on the big night.

Maria pulled together a short, thoughtful list of options. No frills, no noise, just dresses that actually made sense for this one specific person. Within minutes, her relative had found THE dress.

It should have ended there. But Maria couldn't stop thinking about it.

This wasn't a one-off problem. It was a moment nearly every woman lives through, over and over again at different milestones: prom, a wedding, a big interview, a first date, a milestone birthday. Different event, same paralysis.

From Tech to AI Fashion

Maria didn’t start off from fashion. After years spent building products used by millions of people at Meta and Adobe, where the metric that mattered was efficiency, she noticed, again and again, a gap nobody had really closed.

"I didn't set out to build a company," Maria says. "I set out to solve a problem I couldn't stop running into."
