A Story of Sparkle & Struggle

They talk about prom in this glittering, made-for-movie way — the photos, the dancing, the night you'll never forget. And I was ready for all of that. Prom was approaching fast, and I had absolutely no idea what I was going to wear. What sounds like a simple task — buying the dress — quickly seemed to be impossible. 

My mom and I went to every boutique we could find. We drove to the mall. We went to stores in neighboring towns. I kept staring at dresses that were perfectly fine, and feeling absolutely nothing.

Hours melted into days. Days into weeks. We'd walk in hopeful, and walk out empty-handed, every single time. I started to wonder if maybe the dress just… didn't exist.

The Great Prom Dress Hunt

When the stores failed me, I did what any reasonable teenager in crisis does: I went online. Surely the internet, with its infinite dresses and infinite tabs, would save me.

It did not save me.

There was an infinite scroll of options with no end in sight. Every click opened ten more tabs. Every tab opened ten more questions. The real crisis hit when I tried to narrow things down. Color? Style? I knew I wanted something blue or purple. I knew I wanted a long length. And yet somehow, even with that narrow of a filter, nothing felt right. Every dress I scrolled past looked either too plain, too flashy, too formal, or too forgettable. I was paralyzed by choice in the most frustrating way possible. I wanted something that makes me feel like myself, something I'll look back on and love — and having absolutely no way to translate that into search terms.

I would ask my friends for help. They shrugged in that loving, useless way friends do. I asked my mom. She said "you'll know it when you see it," which is genuinely the most unhelpful thing anyone has ever said to me. I was drowning in options and somehow had nothing to wear.

Prom kept creeping closer, and the clock was ticking louder every day.

Then, finally — I found it. A periwinkle blue, bedazzled mermaid dress that somehow checked every unspoken box I didn't even know I had. It was THE DRESS.

Worth every exhausting shopping trip —  but I wish it didn't have to take that long.

Looking back, what I needed wasn't more options. I had too many options. What I needed was someone who could actually listen, not just someone who could point at dresses on a rack, but someone who would hear me say "blue or purple, long, something that feels like me" is a real answer that deserves a real response.

My journey going into marketing has not been easy. At first I was a business management major, who quickly realized she had a bigger passion for marketing. What I love about marketing is that it allows you to be creative and analyze consumer behavior. More specifically, social media, it allows you to create authentic, creative content that resonates with your targeted audience. This can be done by the design of the post and storytelling.
